Each of us sees the world from a different perspective. I paint to give voice to my perspective and the part of me that finds expression difficult through other communication channels. My media is primarily acrylic paint and medium, used in collaboration with papers and found objects and, most recently, sometimes embellished with oils.
I believe that the energy of life exists in everything from objects and creatures of nature to human beings. While most of my work in some form is representational, I love working with textures and shapes to define that energy of life that I see in my subjects. Sometimes it’s vibrant, often more muted.
The Alzheimer’s series was the most emotional work that I produced as my mother declined and slipped into the fog of Alzheimer’s. I watched her life energy fade. My mother passed away in October of 2009 and I am working on the final paintings to complete this gallery.
I’ve been an appreciator of all forms of the arts throughout my life, yet didn’t pursue my own explorations until we moved to Camano Island, Washington in 2005. I began with watercolor studies, then moved into acrylics and mixed media on canvas, learning through workshops, classes, my fellow artists in the Stanwood Camano Arts Guild as well as painting, painting and more painting.
I’m just joining the art scene in Long Grove area, having recently located here from Washington. There, I exhibited at various opportunities locally and in Seattle, including in A Guilded Gallery (Stanwood, WA); in the Northwest Watercolor Society juried ‘Waterworks’ 2009 (Bothell) ,and; the Eastside Association of Fine Art’s Open Juried 2011 and 2012 Exhibitions (Bellevue and Seattle, respectively) .
I have work published in the book, The Women of Mary’s Place, which is a collection of biographies and portraits of homeless and previously homeless women in Seattle who have sought refuge and sanctuary at Mary’s Place. All proceeds from the book go toward helping these women work toward a stable, safe place in the community.
I was also commissioned to paint my interpretation of the ancestral home of Rose Laughlin for the cover of her newly released CD, “House of Memories” (www.roselaughlin.com ).
